Ahrefs is the more in-depth and precise SEO tool made for agencies and serious in-house teams. Ubersuggest is an easier and less expensive tool, designed for small businesses and beginners. The entry-level pricing for Ahrefs vs Ubersuggest is $29/month, with Ahrefs’ Starter plan now offering the same level of pricing as Ubersuggest.
This comparison outlines exactly what each tool offers at each price point, how they are different in practice when it comes to keyword and backlink data, and what other new features are included in both, such as the AI-visibility tracking that both companies quietly rolled out in 2026.
Ahrefs vs Ubersuggest at a Glance: What Each Tool Was Built to Do
It was born in 2010 as a side project of a Ukrainian dev named Dmitry Gerasimenko, who was looking for better backlink data than what was provided by tools at the time. He recruited a university classmate, Igor Pikovets, developed the web crawler by himself and released a paid product in 2011.
The company never raised external funds and continues to operate entirely by subscriptions, out of Singapore. This bootstrapped, engineering-first background is evident in the product; Ahrefs is made by web crawlers, and its interface does not explain the concept of Domain Rating or referring domains.
The origin story for Ubersuggest is different. It started off as a free tool to harvest Google’s autofill suggestions. It was sold for a rumored $120,000 in February 2017 to marketer Neil Patel and contained approximately 38,000 backlinks and 110,000 monthly visitors. We rebuilt it with more versions and made it a full SEO suite, but always the thing that mattered was accessibility and not depth that a total beginner could open, understand and use in 5 minutes.
That comparison of engineering versus accessibility is the root of just about everything else that distinguishes the two platforms, from how they charge for their services to how they represent their data.
How Much Ahrefs and Ubersuggest Actually Cost in 2026
There are still older comparison articles out there stating that Ahrefs begins with $99 or $129 a month. That’s outdated. It was Ahrefs’ first time offering a true $29 per month Starter plan, a move that brings its entry-level offering into the same price range as Ubersuggest’s lowest plan.
Right now, these are the prices each company has listed on its own pricing page:
According to its official pricing page, Ahrefs:
- Ahrefs Free (formerly Webmaster Tools): FREE forever, however only for verified sites you own, and competitor research isn’t included.
- Starter is the plan that offers $29/month, up to 50 tracked keywords, 1 active project, 1 user and credit-limited access to Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer.
- Lite: $129/month, 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of historical data
- Standard: 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 2 years of historical data, unlimited report views per user for $249/month
- Advanced: $449/month, 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, 5 years of historical data
- Business: $1,499/month, needs an annual agreement
Ubersuggest, per its own pricing page:
- Individual: $29/per month, 1 project, approximately 125 tracked keywords, 1000 pages crawled every week, 2000 tracked backlinks.
- Business: $49 per month, 7 projects, ~150 tracked keywords, 5,000 pages crawled per week, 5,000 tracked backlinks
- Enterprise: 15 projects, approximately 300 tracked keywords, 10,000 pages a week, 10,000 tracked backlinks, $99/month.
In addition, Ubersuggest offers a one-time discount for lifetime access periodically, rather than on a subscription basis. Both companies offer a test before paying, although in different ways. Ubersuggest has a 7-day free trial on every month-to-month plan and also a few totally free searches per day without an account, Ahrefs has no test but does have a really free tool for auditing a site you own.
Which One Is Actually Cheaper Once You Start Using It
The list price is just one of the actual costs. All three of Ahrefs lowest-priced plans deduct the number of credits from a given pool for the number of times you open a report, apply a filter, or request backlink data. Standard and above are unlimited fair use per user, but with Starter and Lite, large chunks of the monthly usage can be consumed in just one afternoon of competitor research.
Ubersuggest doesn’t have a credit system of its own, though. Its restrictions are easier to understand: a limited amount of projects, keywords, and pages to audit each week, resulting in a more predictable cost per month, though the cap is lower.
For a single blogger who logs into one blog weekly to check on rankings, it is unlikely that they will ever hit the maximum of Ubersuggest. A competitor research agency that’s performing competitor research for a dozen of their client accounts will use up Ahrefs Starter credits quickly and have to upgrade to a Lite or Standard account almost immediately, as that is when the price gap between the two tools widens again.
Keyword Research: Where the Two Tools Genuinely Diverge
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer is derived from a database of keywords that, according to Ahrefs, represents about 28.7 billion keywords in 217 countries and languages based on live clickstream and search data. This indicates the keyword difficulty, a range of search volume, click data how many people click on a particular keyword when searching, parent topics, and an overview of what is ranking for the keyword, which is useful for determining whether it is worth going after before you compose any piece of content.
Ubersuggest’s keyword tool has fewer data points for each keyword, but is much easier to use for a beginner: you type in a seed term, and receive a list of related keywords alongside their search volume and a competition score, and a few content ideas that are already ranking for it, without having to do even more research to understand what half the columns mean.
The one that works against people the most is keyword difficulty scoring. However, the KD calculation differs between Ahrefs and Ubersuggest because they both consider varying factors like backlinks, content signals, and SERP features in different ways, which means a seemingly “easy” keyword may appear quite difficult in the other. Both scores are correct, but what many small sites do is spend months creating content for keywords that they never had a chance to rank for because they have a low KD number and both scores are correct. It’s important to know which keywords are worth pursuing rather than the tool’s difficulty score you’re more inclined to believe.
Backlink Analysis: Ahrefs Original Strength
It’s the backlinks that Ahrefs has built a reputation for, and it’s evident. According to the company’s own data page, the company tracks about 35 trillion live backlinks, which are updated on a regular basis. According to Ahrefs, new links found usually appear in the report within 15-30 minutes. Site Explorer dissects those links by referring domain, anchor text, link type and a proprietary Domain Rating score of 0-100, which has become an informal benchmark even beyond the Ahrefs customer base.
Ubersuggest also has a backlink checker and for a modest site with just a few hundred backlinks, it’ll uncover most of the obvious backlinks. However, Ubersuggest doesn’t show as many deep, independently verifiable index-size numbers as Ahrefs and its pricing tiers are limited in terms of the quantity of backlinks you can actively monitor: 2,000 on Individual and 10,000 on Enterprise. With serious link building and/or cleanup of a toxic backlink profile, you will see that ceiling rather quickly.
But if you’re looking to build backlinks or audit them, it’s better to understand how link building works before purchasing either tool, as both prevent you from building the wrong kind of links.
Site Audits, Rank Tracking, and Content Tools
Both platforms scan a site for technical problems, broken links, missing metadata, slow pages, and duplicate content, and both generate a prioritized list of problems, rather than just a dump of error messages. Of the two, Ahrefs’ Site Audit is more comprehensive as it identifies additional types of issues and provides more in-depth information about the reasons for impact on rankings.
Frequency of updates is more important than is commonly thought. Ranking positions are available to track daily with Ahrefs from the Lite plan onwards. Tracking keywords is in the weekly updates in all three tiers in Ubersuggest’s own plan comparisons lists. With weekly tracking, you’ll always be stuck with a stale snapshot of a position that you lost, but not when or why, on a competitive keyword where positions can change daily. If you’re a local company that is keeping an eye on a few consistent keywords, weekly may be adequate.
Anyone who wants to determine what the optimal tracking cadence is for them can make side-by-side comparisons of dedicated rank trackers before relying on the built-in tracking system of either platform. Both also produce content concepts and provide a few AI writing aids, but neither can replace an actual content strategy, and a keyword list with compelling search volume still requires genuinely useful, well-structured content to rank.
Both Tools Now Track AI Overview and ChatGPT Visibility
It is the newest, least-known distinction between the two platforms, and it counts more each month. Google has said that AI Overviews feature on about half of searches in the U.S., but the numbers range from about 20% to 60% as reported by various independent trackers, depending on how they measure and which queries they track. In any case, it’s no longer true that 1st position is the only position that will be seen when a searcher views the answer.
In response, Ahrefs has unveiled a new tool called Brand Radar, which monitors the frequency of brand mentions or content within AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity. Now tracked AI prompts are also included in the standard plans as well: 5 on Lite, 10 on Standard, 20 on Advanced, and a subscriber doesn’t have to install the separate Brand Radar product in order to find out if AI answers even mention their site.
Ubersuggest introduced a similar AI Search Visibility function, which verifies if a website and rivals appear in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews, and updates every week or month, depending on the strategy. It’s a less intrusive version of the same concept, but less granular, and it’s actually a feature rather than marketing fluff, and it does make UberSuggest no longer a classic SEO tool.
If you’re still optimizing as if the only links that count were the ten blue ones, you should try this section of either of the tools first.
Ubersuggest Accurate Or Will You Outgrow It?
The one thing everybody asks: Accuracy, which both companies are the least specific about, as neither publishes an independently audited error rate. What matters is user sentiment, and Ahrefs is rated on G2 4.5-out-of-5 based on 671 reviews against Ubersuggest’s 153 reviews, both solid ratings with Ahrefs consistently praised for its depth of data, whereas Ubersuggest is praised for ease of use and value for money.
Most people who outgrow Ubersuggest do so for one of three reasons: they want to monitor more than a few hundred keywords simultaneously, they’re doing backlink outreach on a level where a 2,000 links limit becomes cumbersome, or they have more than the project limit of client websites. None of those are actually issues of accuracy, but are usually issues of capacity that become apparent once a site, or an agency’s list of clients, moves beyond the hobby stage.
If you’re getting less than a few thousand visitors per month at the moment and only have one individual doing SEO, then the numbers from Ubersuggest are foundational enough to use. If you report your results to a client or a boss who will inquire about why you aren’t seeing the same number of estimated traffic sources that you saw last month for a competitor, then Ahrefs’ added level of data depth pays for itself.
Which is Better For Small Businesses and Beginners?
If you’re a true newbie who has never opened a backlink report and still doesn’t know what a referring domain is, then it’s better to start with Ubersuggest. Less prior knowledge is required at the interface, the $29 Individual plan helps to include a real small-business use case one site, weekly rank checks, and basic competitor snapshots, and the free daily searches allow people to try it out before paying.
The price is equal to the Ahrefs Starter plan, but it assumes more. They use a lot of SEO terminology throughout the reports and with the credit system, a beginner who is exploring around without a plan can soon exhaust the monthly credit. However, the company’s free training, Ahrefs Academy, is in place to bridge that gap, and there are many beginners who use Starter after mastering a few lessons.
The more useful question for a small business isn’t which tool feels easier. It’s what you’ll actually do with the data. If the idea is to track rankings on a weekly basis, check on what your competition is doing every so often, and uncover a few ideas for content, then the lowest tier of either tool will do the job.
When It Makes Sense to Use Both or Switch From One to the Other
There’s no reason not to run both tools, and many small agencies do exactly that: UberSuggest for quick daily tracking and client-facing reporting, and Ahrefs for more in-depth competitor and backlink analysis that isn’t performed as frequently, but is certainly more significant when it is. Even if you run both entry plans, you will still save money over one Ahrefs Lite subscription at $29 per month.
A more common route is to begin on Ubersuggest and then move to a larger site when it reaches a point where traffic, or a client account, surpasses the Individual or Business plan’s handle. The typical sign is when the question moves from “What keywords should I target?” to “Why is this particular competitor outranking me?” and when that means moving beyond a superficial list of keywords to a true competitive gap analysis, Ahrefs’ Content Gap and Site Explorer tools are steeper than Ubersuggest’s competitor overview.
There’s no penalty for starting cheap, it’s perfectly fine. The error is using the same first-time tool habitually after the business has obviously outgrown it.
The final decision: Ahrefs vs Ubersuggest
Choose Ubersuggest if:
- You are maintaining between one and three sites and checking the rankings once per week, rather than on a daily basis.
- If you are just starting out in SEO, Ahrefs’ report density would be more of a hindrance than help.
- The answer is that you’ve got a real bottom line of $29-$49 a month for your tools.
Choose Ahrefs if:
- You are working on a client and need to justify your numbers to another party
- Everyday rank monitoring and comprehensive backlink information is more important than paying less per month
- At this point, you are already aware that you don’t completely trust a number that the cheaper tool spits out.
If neither answer is immediately apparent, that’s ok. The honest test is to take the same keywords and put those keywords into both tools’ free preview and determine which one you would trust to use. Whichever one wins that test is the one worth paying for.
But if the real question isn’t which tool you should purchase, it’s also not which one you’re going to use on a regular basis, that’s OK to admit, as well. Most of the time, our SEO team can determine which one, or which combination, is appropriate for your site in just one phone call, since they spend time working in both platforms every day.
